The rallying cry of the Reformation centers around five solas (or in proper Latin, the five solae):

Sola Scriptura, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Solus Christus, and Soli Deo Gloria.

The Five Solae

  • Sola Scriptura

Scripture Alone is the supreme and final arbiter of truth.

  • Sola Gratia

Grace Alone (God's unmerited favor) is the only ground of our salvation.

  • Sola Fide

Faith Alone is the sole instrument of our justification.

  • Solus Christus

Christ Alone is the sole mediator between God and man.

  • Soli Deo Gloria

God Alone deserves to receive glory in all things.

Liberty Baptist Church affirms these as an orthodox expression of the purpose and plan of God in salvation.

Though they do not define the Gospel, they act as a summary of its core tenets, illustrating the graciousness and Christ-centeredness of its glorious truth as revealed in the Scripture.

These great truths are a celebration of the Gospel itself. They not only explain how the Gospel takes root in and captures the sinner, but they also anchor its truth in the authority of the word of God, and to what end it is preached and proclaimed.

Semper Reformanda

  • As a church, we embrace the motto Semper Reformanda, which means always reforming

We apply this truth, not to the essential doctrines of the Christian faith which are settled in the Word of God, but to the need for the church to continually examine itself in the light of God's Word to maintain fidelity to "the faith which was once delivered to the saints" (Jude 3).

In the words of Dr. Joel Beeke, "Reformation is not innovation." We do not seek to be continually reforming to something new and progressive; rather, our responsibility is to return to the simplicity of the faith as expressed in the Scriptures.

We must be diligent to recognize our error where, as a church, we’ve strayed from the absolute standard of God's Word. Thus, we need to repent and return to the truth in both doctrine and practice.
