Behold Our God – Genesis 24

Behold Our God – Genesis 24

Who is our God? What is He like?

He is a God Who answers prayer.

Chapter 24 of Genesis is an amazing story of a faithful man who is rewarded by God with the desires of his heart.  As I read this chapter I was quickly reminded of a passage in the Psalms that speaks to the narrative before us.

Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Psalm 37:4-5

This passage in the Psalms reminds us that the Lord blesses those who have made Him their desire or pleasure.  He responds favorably to those who commit their way to Him, or release their hold on the outcome, leaving it in His hands.  It is about trusting God.

In our story, Abraham is the example of just such a one.  He has come to that point in time where Isaac needs a wife.  It is a pretty important decision to say the least. He has followed the Lord faithfully all the days of his long journey.  Through trial and struggle, in distant lands and foreign countries, he has submitted to the direction of the LORD.  He is now an old man, and the journey to fulfill this desire is more than He can bear.  So, he sends his best servant to accomplish the task of finding a wife for Isaac.  In this task, he has one specific request of his servant that is the desire of his heart…

But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.

Genesis 24:4

Abraham, being a man that walks closely with God, says something about Him in his next breath that is such an encouragement for all who serve the same God.  When the servant questions whether or not the woman he finds will actually follow him, this is Abraham’s response:

The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.

Genesis 24:7

What confidence!  Abraham’s response is essentially, “God has never failed me before, and I can trust that He will not fail me now.”  Friends, God hears our prayers, and answers them according to His will.  Of this one thing you can be sure… you can trust Him.

Behold our God!
